On 6 August 2025, Ashton students Yalena Lewis, Fei Xu, Megan Smith, and Evan Wilson, accompanied by Ms. Botma and Mr. Matenjwa, set off for St Mary’s School, Waverley, Johannesburg, to take part in the National Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships (NIDPSC) — the most prestigious public speaking competition in South Africa.

Around 15 schools from across the country competed for a coveted place in the South African team of 16 students. The championship tested participants across a range of public speaking disciplines: Debating, After Dinner Speech, Impromptu, Persuasive, and Interpretive Reading. Every competitor was required to participate in all set categories, presenting to a panel of highly experienced adjudicators over four intense and demanding days.

While Evan Wilson and Megan Smith unfortunately did not advance to the finals, Fei Xu impressed with her Persuasive Speech, and Yalena Lewis captivated with her After Dinner Speech, both earning places in the Finals.

In a thrilling Grand Finale, the names of the South African representatives were announced — and to huge applause, Yalena Lewis was selected for the national team! She will represent South Africa at Worlds next year, to be held in Bristol, England.

Congratulations to Fei Xu for reaching the finals, and an even bigger congratulations to Yalena Lewis for securing her place on the world stage. You have made Ashton proud — we can’t wait to see you shine at Worlds!
